Biography

Lena Kitzing is since September 2023 part-time Professor at FSR and teaches the course Regulation and Integration of Renewable Energy. She is also Head of Section for Society, Markets & Policy at DTU Wind and Energy Systems, and Associate Professor in Energy Economics and Policy. Her research spans across the energy-economy-society nexus and especially concerns the effective governance of energy systems through policy instruments, with particular focus on deployment and financing of renewables and their integration into the energy system. Lena is a leading expert in the economics and policy for offshore wind energy with a number of highly published articles in the area. Lena has taught courses at Bachelor, Master and PhD level at five different universities including on environmental economics and policy analysis, energy finance and risk management, regulation and integration of renewable energy. She supervises PhD students and Master thesis projects. Lena is a sought-after scientific advisor to public and private organisations, is regularly invited to key-note speeches and high-level events, and appears in the media on energy related issues. Since March 2022, Lena is member of the European Scientific Advisory Board on Climate Change, with a mandate by the European Climate Law to advise European policymakers and stakeholders on climate and energy related decisions (Climate-advisory-board.europa.eu).

Biography

Baptiste Alfano-Giacometti is responsible for the logistic and administrative support of the FSR team.

He holds a MPhil in Race, Ethnicity, Conflict from the Trinity College in Dublin (Ireland) and a Bachelor in Journalism from Tampere University (Finland).

Since graduating, he has worked in the NGO sector in Bruxelles (ERIO) and Rome (European Alternatives) as a project assistant. He subsequently worked as an administrative and scientific assistant for several EU agencies or bodies, the European Food Safety Authority (Parma), the European Investment Bank (Luxembourg) and the European Medicines Agency (London/Amsterdam).’

Biography

Marzia Sesini is the Research Team Leader – Molecules & Materials at the Florence School of Regulation (FSR), where she leads research activities on the decarbonisation of the energy system through the lens of gas, clean molecules, and critical raw materials. She is Director of the Loyola Autumn Research School – LARS and of the EU Gas ‎Network Codes course, and Co-Director of the Energy Markets and Regulation course.

Her research focuses on supply and value chains for decarbonised energy carriers and technologies, explored from multiple angles: security of supply, renewable and low-carbon gases, clean molecules, critical raw materials, cross-infrastructure integration, and distribution network optimisation modelling.

An engineer by training, Marzia has accrued extensive experience in the energy sector across academic and corporate settings. Prior to joining FSR, she worked at the Chaire Economie du Climat at Université Paris-Dauphine, the Institut Europlace de Finance, in the Corporate Strategy Department at Snam, at Bocconi University’s Department of Management and Technology, and at the Oxford Institute of Energy Studies (OIES).

She holds a Ph.D. in Process Systems Engineering from the Chemical Engineering Department at Imperial College London, where her research investigated the costs and political implications of shared and coordinated natural gas storage in the EU under supply/demand shocks. She also holds an M.S. in Sustainability Management from the Earth Institute at Columbia University and an M.S. in Engineering from Pavia State University.

Marina Cascella

Executive Training Officer

Biography

Marina Cascella is an Executive Training Officer at the Florence School of Regulation. She has been working at FSR since September 2019, and she is responsible for planning, designing, and coordinating tailor-made, residential, and online training courses at the FSR.

Her role includes liaising with partners and organisation interested in developing training courses; coordinating with course directors and instructors for the training programme, and being the point of contact for participants, faculty, and staff for training.

She holds a Master Degree in International Relations from the University of Florence and a Master in Human Rights and Conflict Management from the School of Advanced Studies Sant’Anna. She has worked with several international organisations such as UNRWA, Amnesty International, Save the Children and the Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights both as a programme officer – coordinating training courses and events – and as a social worker, focusing on human rights and migration.
