Explore how to transform electric vehicles into flexible energy assets through smart integration strategies that support Europe’s clean energy goals.
Combining expert insights, case studies, and hands-on exercises to tackle the technical, economic, and regulatory challenges of EV-grid coordination, this course provides a rigorous framework combining academic insights and practical knowledge to help participants navigate the challenges and opportunities of smart EV integration in Europe. Additionally, it aims to foster collaboration and experience-sharing across European countries.
The electrification of transport is a key pillar of Europe’s decarbonisation strategy, aiming to reduce emissions and integrate renewable energy sources. However, as electric vehicle (EV) adoption accelerates, new challenges emerge for electricity markets, grid operators, policymakers, and businesses. Without proper coordination, large-scale EV charging can lead to grid congestion, increased electricity demand during peak hours, and higher system costs. Smart integration strategies—such as bi-directional charging (V2G), demand response, and optimised charging schedules—offer solutions by transforming EVs into flexible energy assets that enhance grid stability, maximise renewable energy use, and create economic value.
Despite these benefits, several barriers hinder smart EV integration. Technical constraints, high infrastructure costs, battery degradation concerns, regulatory complexities, and fragmented business models make large-scale implementation challenging. Moreover, aligning the interests of multiple stakeholders—such as energy providers, mobility operators, and consumers—requires effective coordination and innovative market mechanisms.
This course provides a rigorous framework combining academic knowledge and practical case studies to help participants navigate the opportunities and challenges of smart EV integration in Europe. Through expert-led sessions, real-world examples, and interactive exercises, participants will gain insights into key topics such as electricity markets, charging infrastructure, optimisation strategies, and business models. The course will also feature collaborative exercises where participants assume the roles of industry stakeholders to develop strategic solutions.
