Highlights from Katowice – COP24

The Paris Agreement is undoubtedly a milestone in the fight against climate change. It sets the framework for the long-term global common action against climate change by all nations. The coming period will tell whether its goals, structure and rules are sufficient to keep the global temperature rise well below 1,5C as required by the IPCC (the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, nominated to define the rules of the Paris Agreement).

COP24 agreed on the rules to bring the Paris Agreement to life, defining important details on the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), transparency, global stocktake and compliance.

On 12 February 2019, a live-streamed seminar took place at the EUI, Florence (Italy).

The aim of the seminar was to present and discuss the main outcome of the COP24 (Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change), which took place in December 2018 in Katowice, Poland.

Organised by the FSR Climate team of the Florence School of Regulation (EUI), the seminar featured two guest speakers: Prof. Benito Muller and Leonardo Massai.

Professor Benito Müller is Managing Director of Oxford Climate Policy, and Director of the European Capacity Building Initiative (ECBI). Leonardo Massai is Legal and Policy Advisor for the Coalition for Rainforest Nations – CfRN and Assistant Professor in EU Law, International and EU Environmental Law, Climate Change Law, Human Rights and Environments, UN Multilateral Negotiations at the Catholic University of Lille in France.

The seminar addressed key highlights of COP24, including what is left for the next COPs, in consideration of the urgent need to increase ambition and strengthen countries’ commitments.
