EU’s energy policy is facing enormous challenges. Russia’s war in Ukraine has profoundly shaken the energy markets and the traditional supply chain of fossil fuels towards the bloc. High energy prices, stoking inflation, and recession fears are deeply influencing the lives of European citizens. At the same time, the climate emergency is not receding, If anything, the window to reduce global warming to 1.5°C is rapidly narrowing. Swift actions need to be coordinated and put in place to avoid a worst-case scenario for the climate in 2050. In the search for solutions to address the emergency, proposed energy policy will have to take three objectives into consideration: sustainability, security and competitiveness. In this event we will try to answer several questions on how the policy might aid in the race to achieve carbon neutrality: is it possible to respond to a triple challenge at the same time, namely, to accelerate the energy transition while achieving energy security, economic security, and climate security? And how do we mobilize European citizens to support the energy transition and without leaving anyone behind?
