EU energy policy pillars | Andris Piebalgs

In this video lecture, Andris Piebalgs, FSR part-time professor and former EU Commissioner, reflects on the importance of energy in modern societies and presents the three pillars of EU energy policy: security of supply, competitiveness and environmental sustainability. In his lecture, Andris highlights the trade-offs among the different goals of energy policy and refers to the dynamic relation that exists among them. Balancing them represents a fine act of government.

This video lecture is part of the EU Green Deal online course – 2021 edition.

This course has been discontinued in 2025 and replaced by a new online course, Getting to Net Zero, discussing similar issues but at a global level.
