Iván Santos Esteras

Head of Railway Unit, The Spanish National Markets and Competition Commission (CNMC)

Biography

After studying the Degree in Economics at Pompeu Fabra University (1994-1998), Iván Santos obtained a Master in Industrial Economics at Carlos III University (1999-2001) and a Postgraduate in EC Competition Law at King’s College (London, 2003). Finally he received the IESE Management Development Program (2010).

From 2001-2013, he held the position of deputy director in the Department of Economic Analysis and Markets of the Telecommunications Market.  Commission. From 2013-2015, Iván Santos developed his activity in the Airport charges unit in the Comisión Nacional de los Mercados y la Competencia (CNMC). Since August 2015 – today, he is Head of the Railway Unit at CNMC.

Teresa Rodríguez de las Heras Ballell

Biography

Prof. Rodriguez de las Heras Ballel is Associate Professor of Commercial Law at University Carlos III of Madrid. Her research interests range from Digital law in commercial transactions and business activities (platforms, intermediary liability, privacy, IA and other emerging technologies, big data, smart contracts, Fintech, Insurtech, Regtech, crowdfunding), international business transactions (legal harmonization), secured transactions and finance law.

Prof. Rodriguez de las Heras Ballel is very active in policy making at European and international level. Indeed, she is a Member of the EU Commission Expert Group on Liability/Technologies formation on Artificial Intelligence, and of the Observatory on the Online Platform Economy, as well as of the UNIDROIT Study Group on MAC Protocol to the Cape Town Convention on international interests.

She is a member of the Council of the European Law Institute, and an arbitrator at the Madrid Court of Arbitration, and at the Spanish Court of Arbitration.

Biography

Ian is a Project Manager of the FSR and works with the team on all externally funded projects.

Since graduating, he has worked at three of the former UK Research Councils (ESRC, AHRC and STFC), now UK Research and Innovation (UKRI), as programme manager for a wide range of national and international funding schemes. He subsequently worked at the UK’s liaison office for European funding programmes in Brussels, the UK Research Office (UKRO), for more than four years. He joined the EUI in March 2018 initially working on the 2018 and 2019 editions of the Institute’s largest annual conference, The State of the Union, before joining the RSCAS and FSR in October 2019.

Nina Nesterova

Biography

Nina currently holds the position of Professor of Sustainable Tourism and Transport and serves as Lead of the Centre for Sustainable Tourism Transport at Breda University. Her research focuses on driving the transition toward sustainable tourism and leisure mobility by reducing the climate footprint of these sectors, which largely depends on the transport modes used. In this context, Nina works on advancing the modal shift in tourism toward more environmentally friendly forms of travel, such as train travel, public transport, and active mobility.

Nina’s previous roles include:

  • Team lead Smart and Sustainable Mobility at the Breda University, leading national and European research on urban mobility
  • Research Scientist at the Netherlands Organisation of Applied Research, working on urban freight and sustainable transport.
  • Consultant and researcher at Panteia, working on road, rail, maritime and IWW transport.
  • Intern, between others, at the European Commission and the World Bank.

Nina holds a PhD in Economic Sciences (with a specialization in transport) from Aix-Marseille University in France, as well as two Master’s degrees in Logistics (France) and International Economics (Russia). Within tourism transport, Nina’s focus lies in facilitating sustainable travel modes in tourism and encouraging a modal shift toward more environmentally friendly forms of leisure and tourism travel.

Patricia Perrennes

Biography

Patricia Perennes has been working in rail transport since 2011. After completing a Phd thesis in economics and taking up her first position at RFF/SNCF Réseau, she joined the strategy department of SNCF holding company. She has been working for Rail Public Transport Authority since 2017: first as Transport Advisor for regional PTA association (Régions de France), then as a Deputy Transport Director in the Region Centre-Val de Loire. She is now a consultant for Trans-Missions consulting firm, working for the French Region to help them tender their Rail Public Service Obligation Contracts.
