ProMOTion: the biggest energy project in the EU’s Horizon 2020 Research Program

FSR is the task leader for the design of the economic framework of the biggest energy project in the Horizon 2020 Research Program.

In January this year the project ‘PROgress on Meshed HVDC Offshore Transmission Networks’ (PROMOTioN) was launched. The aim is to investigate during the next four years the financial, technical and environmental benefits to the European electricity market of a meshed offshore transmission grid connecting offshore wind farms to land.

Currently it is the biggest energy project in the EU’s Horizon 2020 Research Program. The consortium which is coordinated by DNV GL includes 34 partners from 11 countries – all major HVDC manufacturers, TSO’s linked to the North Sea, several wind turbine suppliers, offshore wind developers, leading academics, and consulting companies.

Next to the development and demonstration of key technologies which are crucial for the well-functioning and financial viability of an offshore grid, also a legal, economic and financial framework will be developed for the coordinated planning, construction and operation of integrated offshore infrastructures. The FSR is appointed as the task leader for the design of the economic framework.
