
Gian Luca Zampa is a partner of Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer and heads the antitrust practice in Italy. He specializes in the whole range of merger control and antitrust matters, including cartels & leniency, vertical arrangements, unfair trade practices, State aid, both before the EU Commission and the Italian Antitrust Authority (IAA). He is also highly active in foreign direct investments matters (so-called Golden Powers) and in antitrust litigation at the national and EU levels. His recent work includes advising a number of global companies in relation to cartel and dominance investigations by the EU Commission as well as by the Italian Antitrust Authority, and a number of multinationals in merger control proceedings at either EU or national level.
Gian Luca is recognised as an international and national leader in GCR WWL listings and recently has been named ‘EU Competition Lawyer of the Year 2021’ (Class/MF-CNBC awards) and ‘Lawyer of the Year 2020 – Competition & EU law’ (TopLegal Awards).
He graduated in law (J.D., summa cum laude) from the University of Bologna and is dual-qualified (admitted to the Italian Bar and to the New York Bar). He holds an LL.M. at Queen Mary & Westfield College, University of London (EC Competition Law) and completed a second LL.M. at Columbia University Law School (N.Y.), having specializing in antitrust economics and law.
